These templates were used for casting Cardiff's whole tram network. When new rails were made, they would have to meet the exact dimensions of these steel sections, to make sure all trams could run on them. The introduction of the Cardiff Corporation's electric tram service in 1902 signalled a new era of travel in Cardiff. For the first time people could travel around the city further and quicker than horse drawn transport allowed.
