In 1912, A. Saunders opened a general store on Pontmanmoor Road in Splott and supplied ships with goods. He specialised in tea and would weigh the loose tea on these scales before packaging it up for sale.
Peter Saunders describes his father's shop in Splott: "Father's shop was a general store, on Pontmanmoor Road in Splott. He was a grocer and provision merchant. But he also supplied the coastal shipping at the docks because I used to go down with a handcart to the ships there as a child. I suppose his forte was tea. He imported a lot of tea, there'd be tea chests everywhere. Father was quite strict, it wasn't an open all hours shop. It opened at 8 o'clock and closed at six. Wednesday afternoon was an afternoon off, and it was always closed on a Sunday. The shop was demolished, like an awful lot of the buildings in Splott at the time. Father said to take something, so I took the scales. I suppose they summed up the shop to me. I used to have to clean the damn things, and as a child I used to play with them."
