While Cardiff still has a working dock, the health and safety training and equipment used by dockers has changed greatly since 1839 when the first dock opened. The cargoes that dockers handle has changed too. In the past, Cardiff was known for exporting coal, and imported little except timber for pit props, some wheat and grain, meat, fruit and vegetables. Today the docks handle steel, timber, scrap metal, chemicals, oil, petrol and even welcome cruise ships.
Dennis Joyce describes how safety has improved at the docks: "...now you have a lot of training given to you - everyone that starts takes an induction course and there's training for all the individual machines. Before, you learnt everything from the older men. It's still a dangerous job because you're handling such heavy materials - like the steel coils, they're so heavy that if you make a mistake someone could lose an arm or a leg. You have to be 100% focused on the job or you could hurt someone. Years ago the men wore a peaked cap and just standard boots and that was it - no special equipment. Everything is provided today, your high vis jacket, work boots, everything. For all of the different machinery there's courses, health and safety training. Whatever you drive on the ports now you have to be certified for - years ago, it was if you could get on and drive it, you just did!"
