In the 1890s the London firm of J R Freeman & Son opened a new cigar factory in Cardiff. This hand tool was used at J.R. Freeman & Sons to cut the tobacco leaves so they could be made into cigars.
“When I first started in Freeman’s, and I came off my home bus from Penarth, I got off the bus and I walked across the road and there was just loads of buses all lined up along the street going up past Freeman’s. The scale of the cigar business was huge with huge numbers of people being transported down from the Valleys, from the Rhymney, the Merthyr and the Rhondda. Probably over ten buses coming every morning to leave people off into the factory. Our supervisor was walking us round all the rooms and all you see is these hundreds of women, mainly all women, not many men, and loads and loads of women, and it was quite intimidating when you first walk in."
