Needle case from Howells & Co., the Cardiff Drapers. In 1865, James Howells opened his first business in Cardiff, a drapery shop on The Hayes. A farmer’s son from Pembrokeshire, James had been apprenticed to a local draper in Fishguard and had worked in a large department store in London before opening his business in Cardiff. Cardiff with its expanding population and wealth in the town was probably seen as a promising location to start a business.
Between the late 1860s and early 1900s, the business continued to grow and by his death in 1909, James Howell and Co. operated from 9-14 St Mary Street, parts of Wharton Street and Trinity Street too.
This needle case belonged to Ellen Davies who would make clothes for her granddaughter, Enid, in the 1930s and 40s.
Enid recalls: “My grandmother owned this needle case. She made all my dresses. I can remember going to Howell’s… with her to choose material and cottons… I remember that she bought material, big bales of material and they had long counters where they used to measure it. There was a tape measure built into the counter.”
