Opening on the 2nd May 1896 at Cathays Park, the Cardiff Fine Arts, Industrial and Maritime Exhibition included fine art exhibitions, scientific machinery and equipment as well as outdoor concerts and shows.
The Exhibition showcased Cardiff as an ambitious and progressive town, at a time when it was bidding for City status.
Designed by Edwin Seward, it was described by The South Wales Daily as “the greatest undertaking of the kind ever attempted in the Principality or the West of England”.
By the time it closed on 30th September 1896, the Cardiff Fine Art, Industrial and Maritime Exhibition had been visited by over a million people.
Many visitors bought souvenirs like this glass so they could take a small piece of the Exhibition home with them.
