This painting shows Ten Acre Field around 1850 and captures Cardiff during a time of great development. The Cardiff Gaol, Glamorganshire and Monmouthshire Infirmary and Dispensary and the Taff Vale Railway Station built for Cardiff’s rapidly growing population can be seen in the painting.
Since 1850 there have been great changes to Cardiff’s landscape, with urban developments transforming sites such as the ‘Ten Acre Field’. Today the location of the painting would be in a built up area of Cardiff, near Moira Terrace in Adamsdown.
Some of the landmarks, however, remain a part of the modern City. The tower of St Mary’s Church on Bute Street and the spire of St John’s Church on The Hayes can be seen in the distance.
