Freestanding telescope from Penylan Observatory. This telescope was used outside by Observatory visitors whilst they waited to use the large reflecting telescope. It dates to before 1939.
The eyepiece is embossed ‘F Burnerd & Co’ but they were the sellers, not the makers. The makers were John Browning London. The two holes visible near the eye piece would have attached a viewfinder to the telescope. A refracting telescope like this one worked by having two lenses: the front lens caught the light from the night sky and bent it to make a small image, and the eyepiece lens magnified this image for the viewer.
