Somalis have lived in Cardiff for over 100 years. In the late 19th century Somali men came to Cardiff as seamen working on ships which had transported coal around the world.
This fandhal was donated by the Somali Integration Society. A fandhal is a decorated handmade serving spoon often crafted at social gatherings and associated with Nomadic Somali communities. It gives us an idea of the traditions and crafts Somalis would have brought with them when they came to Cardiff at the end of the 19th century.
