This painting was created as part of the Museum of Cardiff’s People of Butetown project. Using the centenary of the 1919 Race Riots as a starting point, the project commissioned artists from Butetown to tell the stories of the Riots, and the prejudice and racism experienced by the community, and also celebrate resilience and creativity.
“This painting represents the spirit of Tiger Bay. The story goes my great grandfather would arm himself by tying a carving knife to a broomstick, to make a bayonet. The local men would then patrol the streets and bridge of Butetown, during the 1919 riots.” Painting by Kyle Alonzo Legall @higher_graphics
