Speedway motorcycle racing first came to Cardiff in 1928. Held at Sloper Road Stadium, meetings began to decline in the 1930s and stopped in 1937. In 1951 speedway returned to Cardiff to a new stadium in Penarth Road. 20,000 spectators watched the opening meeting against Rayleigh.
Pamela Nicholas’ parents were members of the Speedway Supporter’s Club and remembers going to the speedway with her parents as a child: “Even now, whenever a motorbike goes past me in the street, I catch the smell of the fumes and think– Speedway!”
Amy Western recalls: “My grandparents met in 1951 when my grandmother Olive, was the Social Secretary of the Cardiff East Supporters Group, one of four supporters groups for the Cardiff Dragons… My Grandmother Olive, attended with her brother, and my Grandfather Gordon attended with his parents as ‘something to do’. The Cardiff Dragons unfortunately did not remain in Cardiff past the 1953 season… Although speedway in Cardiff was short lived, my grandparent’s relationship blossomed and they married on the 12th March 1955.” -
