This badge belonged to Margery Lewis who walked on the peace march from Cardiff to Greenham Common, Berkshire in 1981. Margery also helped organise the Cardiff side of the march, such as the accommodation for the women involved.
Tessa Hartog tells us “My mother-in-law…was among the original 36 women who walked from Cardiff to Greenham Common in 1981 - aiming to raise awareness of government plans to site nuclear cruise missiles at the US air force base. On arrival, frustrated by the lack of media attention, they pledged to camp there until the weapons were removed.”
The protest evolved into the Greenham Common women’s peace camp which lasted for another 19 years.
Speaking about the march, Margery said “Greenham did alter my life because like many women I didn’t realise sufficiently what strength and what space women have…”
