This photograph shows the Wales Anti-Apartheid Movement (WAAM) stall outside the Law Courts in 1984.
Hanef Bhamjee, the founder of WAAM explains:
“Our demo in 1984 started in front of the Law Courts and we had a stall to sell items to raise money. We had a rally there and then let off balloons. 10,000 children were in detention in South Africa so about 20 [Welsh] children wore t-shirts and learnt about the children they were representing and let off balloons. We then walked to Sophia Gardens and had another rally. WAAM provided the food for everyone. It was seeing things happening in South Africa on TV that shocked the world, seeing nearly a thousand children being killed in 1976 in Soweto and other schools, people were appalled and wanted to do something.”
