This badge is one of a number of badges collected by the Cardiff Women’s Centre. Cardiff Women’s Centre was formed by a group of women volunteers in 1979. They gave advice and support to women on housing, health, sexuality and benefits and ran courses and events. When they expanded in 1986, they rented out rooms in their building to groups such as the Rape Crisis Group, Cardiff Lesbian Line and the Women’s Clothing Operative. On 12 January 1992, Cardiff Women’s Centre closed due to a lack of funding.
This badge would have been worn in protest against Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988. Section 28 stated that a local authority “shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality” or “promote the teaching in any maintained school the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship”.
