Womanby Street is the home to several music venues and has been described as the home of grassroots and live music in the city. The Save Womanby Street campaign began when two planning applications were submitted for the street; a block of residential flats and a hotel.Thousands of supporters signed a petition and marched to City Hall to get support from the Council. The campaign was successful; on 28 September 2017 the developers withdrew their plans and on 14 December 2017 Cardiff City Council announced they would be working to develop a music strategy for Cardiff.
This T-shirt was worn by one of the Save Womanby Street Campaigners, Minty, when Cardiff Council made their pledge. As part of the music strategy, a Cardiff Music Board was set up in 2019 to protect and promote Cardiff’s music scene and Minty was appointed to the Board. However in 2020 Minty resigned from the Board as plans for 20 flats were approved on Queen Street opposite a pub and music venue the Flute and Tankard.
