These rainbow laces were donated by Cardiff Dragons. Cardiff Dragons FC are Wales’ first and only LGBTI+ football club.
In 2013, Stonewall launched their Rainbow Laces campaign to address homophobia in football. Rainbow laces were given to all Premier League and Football League Clubs and players were encouraged to wear the laces to show support for LGBTQI people in sports.
Darrin Hughes tells us about the campaign: “The FA started a campaign against homophobia in football and this year [2013] the rainbow campaign highlighted it by [asking players] to wear rainbow laces.
Our first league game was a week ago, against Birmingham and that’s when we wore the rainbow laces in our football boots. It was the same weekend Gary Lineker wore them.
Cardiff Dragons had a lot of supportive tweets from people in the professional game. The coach from Leeds tweeted saying he appreciated what we were doing for football.”
