In March 2009, the Cardiff branch of Friends of the Earth and Cardiff Against the Incinerator, protested in Queen Street to raise awareness of the proposal to build an incinerator in Cardiff. An incinerator is a furnace for burning waste.
Raoul Bhambral voiced Cardiff Friends of the Earth concerns:
"Cardiff Friends of the Earth is concerned about the effect an incinerator will have on Cardiff’s air quality. Areas like Splott and Newport Road are already suffering from poor quality air but the Council and the Environment Agency don’t seem to be looking into it. An incinerator is likely to make matters worse."
Despite the protests, building for the incinerator began in the summer of 2012. Local groups, like Cardiff Friends of the Earth, continued to protest after construction began.
