Ticket Issuing Machines (TIM) were introduced by Cardiff Corporation in 1938/1939, making it easier for conductors to issue tickets. Previously conductors carried a wooden rack which held bunches of tickets. When they issued a ticket they would pull a ticket from the bundle and punch the ticket at the appropriate stop marked on the ticket.
The TIM printed tickets with the cost and date of the journey so inspectors could check that the correct fare had been paid.
