This plate would have been screwed to the side of a wagon to identify it on railway sidings. It would have been probably painted black with white lettering. The name across the top identifies the owner and the number shows which wagon it is, so the owner had over 200. As it says Cardiff at the bottom it shows the owner was based here.
There were over 120 miles of railway track in the docks, squeezed into around one square mile so these plates would help owners keep track of their wagons’ locations.
