Robert Giles' family has owned Rumney Pottery for seven generations. In the past it made 'everyday' items for the local community, like big pans, flowerpots and jugs. Now they make a different product: “Now we make more commemorative items for schools, clubs and churches, even prestigious awards for the Welsh Assembly Government. Being in the Pottery has always brought with it challenges over the ages. There is a need to come up with new ideas within the work, as trends and people’s needs change…You really have to work hard in the business, as working here, even today, can be very labour intensive. Each plate, jug, cup can take a very long time...even now it doesn’t always go right, batches fail. You really need to work hard, as it’s a living too!”
This plate was made by Rumney Pottery for the Welsh Assembly Government Awards in 2010.
