In the 19th and early 20th century bakers would deliver bread to households using horse and carts. Merrett's Bakery on Newport Road sold their goods around the city and then, at the end of the week, would collect what was owed to them. This tray was given to Jane Louisa Wide at Christmas in 1933 for being a loyal customer to Merrett's. It was given pride of place on her sideboard.
