A monitoring unit is the communication link between a person wearing an electronic tag and the monitoring centre.
People can be tagged for different reasons: after being released from prison, as part of a bail agreement or as part of a criminal sentence.
The tag monitors where a person is located and sends the details back to the monitoring unit in the individual's home which then sends the information to the monitoring centre. If an individual breaks their curfew or enters restricted boundaries the authorities are alerted.
